In 1998, the International Safety Management (ISM) code of practice governing Safety Of Life At Sea became mandatory on certain ocean going vessels and from 2002 all other vessels must comply. In particular, chapter IX of the SOLAS regulation - ‘Management for the safe operation of ships’ - details preventative maintenance procedures that should be established to ensure the seaworthiness of ships at all times.
